A Very Special Mother’s Day Brunch: Building a Bridge to Connect Schools and Community

Written by Staff Writer-Blog Events Now

Nehemiah’s Visionary (NEVI) is a non-profit organization whose mission is to reverse the declining trend of communities and schools by strengthening the role of parents in their children’s education.

NEVI seeks to achieve its mission by: imparting knowledge that will empower parents to articulate their children’s educational needs; providing training and mentoring services to assist parents in being effective teachers at home; helping parents to “tap into” school resources that promote effective parental involvement.

NEVI has organized its annual Mother’s Day Brunch to take place on May 7th, 2022 from 11 am to 2 pm at only $65 a ticket or $300 a table. The brunch is aimed at empowering mothers and mother figures within the community with skills to be better equipped at effective parenting in all areas of their lives, especially education. NEVI’s focus has always been to improve the link between parental involvement and its effects on both schools and the community, organizing this brunch is one of the ways to achieve this focus.

It’s important to remember that Wards 7 and 8 of the district have the largest population of at risk youth and families living in poverty. It’s also important to remember that Wards 7 and 8 have the highest percentage of obese youth, highest number of single parents led homes, highest number of both parents and youths involved in criminal activities plus they have the highest number of parents whose highest level of education is high school or less.

Join us for the Mother’s Day Brunch as we discuss how these statistics can be better addressed. On our panel we have excellent speakers including Barbara Spencer Dunn- Author/ Historian, LaVonn Reed Thomas- Community Strategist, Sharonna Ford- Parent/ Author, Alita- Geri Carter- CEO/ Founder of commission for Health, Jennifer Hooker- Speech Pathologist, and Rev. Dr. Shawn Richmond- CEO/ Founder Goshen Publishers.

A number of topics will be discussed. Topics such as;

  • Community Involvement Programs
  • Youth Empowerment Programs
  • Imparting knowledge that will empower parents to articulate their children’s education needs
  • Empowering Parents and Guardians to have control over the education outcomes of their children
  • Advocating for adequate school resources

Our desire is that the brunch provides mothers with an opportunity to interact with each other and share experiences. Above all our hope is that you have fun and leave empowered as you go out to take charge of the education of your children within your community.
